The Lagos State Government (LASG) is calling for heightened awareness and immediate action from residents following a surge in severe gastroenteritis cases, raising concerns about a potential cholera outbreak.

Recent Reports Spark Alarm:

Professor Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, confirmed an increase in cases, particularly in Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe local government areas. This surge, reported over the past 48 hours, has resulted in approximately 60 hospital admissions and tragically, five deaths.

Professor Abayomi highlighted that these fatalities were primarily due to patients presenting with severe dehydration at a late stage of illness. He emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

Suspected Cause and Ongoing Investigation:

LASG suspects contaminated water as a potential source of the outbreak. The Ministry of Health's Directorate of Environmental Health and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) have been mobilized to investigate the Lekki Victoria Island axis for possible water contamination.

Heightened Surveillance and Response:

The government has activated a state-wide heightened surveillance and response system to effectively track and manage the situation. This includes healthcare facilities being alerted and prepared to handle potential cholera cases.

Public Health Warning and Preventative Measures:

Professor Abayomi advised residents to prioritize the following actions to prevent the spread of cholera:

  • Safe Drinking Water: Ensure drinking water is safe by boiling, chlorinating, or using bottled water. Avoid ice products made with untreated water.
  • Proper Sanitation: Utilize toilets, dispose of waste safely, and avoid open defecation.
  • Meticulous Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water, particularly before eating, preparing food, and after using the toilet.
  • Food Safety: Always follow proper food safety guidelines while preparing and storing food.

Staying Informed and Reporting Suspected Cases:

Residents are encouraged to rely on official sources of information, such as the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), for updates on prevention, treatment, and management of cholera. Additionally, they can report suspected cases through the following emergency hotlines: 08023169485, 08137412348, 767, or 112.

Commitment to Public Health:

Professor Abayomi reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of its citizens. He promised to keep the public informed and emphasized the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards and taking proactive measures to prevent a full-blown outbreak.
